A participating provider is a health care provider who agrees to always take assignment. Participating providers may not charge you more than Medicare’s approved amount, even if they charge non-Medicare patients more for the service. You will still pay a coinsurance or copayment of the cost for a visit or service—usually 20 percent of the Medicare-approved amount, if you have Original Medicare.
